A river needs a bank to flow. Without structure, even the most powerful force becomes a flood - directionless and messy. The same is true for your website. A consistent website acts as the channel through which your message flows cleanly, confidently, and with purpose.

From tone of voice to colours and image treatment, consistency across your website strengthens brand recognition and builds trust. It shows your user that you're thoughtful, professional, and reliable before they read a single word.

This article is going to dive into the types of restrictions we add, why we do it, and the overall benefit to your business.

What sort of limitations can I expect?

Colours

A key factor in branding is a recognisable colour palette. Users should be able to recognise your brand from the colours that are used. When designing your website, we look at the colours that are most identifiable throughout your brand and use those in key areas across the website. Not being able to update those colours will ensure that you maintain the colour story throughout.

Images

Images are hugely beneficial when used correctly. They draw the user in and can communicate a message to your user quicker than text can. Because they’re so noticeable on a web page, their layout should remain consistent. Our approach makes sure that images crop to specific sizes and aspect ratios depending on where they’re being used.

This doesn’t mean that all images will crop the same - variety is a great way to avoid monotony on a website. The key is to remain consistent with other elements that are the same - a thumbnail will always crop to the same size as another thumbnail, the same as a header image will always crop to the same size as another header image.

Text

Text is at the core of the information that you are communicating, so text considerations around consistency are vital. The font family chosen can vary between headings and body text depending on what your brand already uses. The key here is to make sure that all elements of the same type use the same font.

As with fonts, the size of the text will vary depending on where it’s being used. Some text elements need to be bigger to get the message across quickly, while others need to be smaller to allow for more information to be delivered. We ensure that the font sizes all adhere to the high accessibility standards and work well on a range of devices.

Colour and type is a huge area of consideration when it comes to text. Your text colours should not only work well for aesthetic reasons and work within your brand palette, but they also need to be accessible. Your text colour should have enough contrast with the background colour that users with low vision are still able to read with ease.

“A good design system fades into the background, so the content can shine.”

How this strengthens brand trust

Internet users have become increasingly adept at identifying anything online that doesn’t look legitimate. Inconsistent text layouts, images that are different size and content added haphazardly to a web page are all indicators to an end user that their information isn’t safe.

Having a consistent visual standard across a website lets a user know that you can be trusted. A well organised, consistent website shows your user that you are professional and care about the details,  a standard that you follow through in the service you provide them.

And the impact goes beyond perception. Consistency directly influences how users behave. Research shows that websites with clear, predictable design patterns enjoy longer browsing times, lower bounce rates, and higher conversion rates. When users feel confident that your brand is reliable, they’re more likely to sign up, buy, or return. In short: trust turns into engagement, engagement into action, and action into loyalty.

A flexible design system isn’t about locking everything down — it’s about taking the guesswork out of design decisions. When colours, layouts, and typography are already set, content creators don’t have to worry about how something will look. Instead, they can pour their energy into producing content that connects — sharper headlines, stronger stories, and messages that land with impact.

Final thoughts

It might feel counterintuitive, but restrictions are not a creative block - they're what keep your message clear and effective. By removing some options, we're ensuring that your website maintains the consistency that is key for user trust. Much like riverbanks, the designed limitations we put in place through design systems don’t hold you back - they keep your brand flowing in the right direction.

As your business grows, your team might change and you may have multiple contributors to the website. A design system built on consistent rules ensures that your visual standards don’t depend on one person. The website remains cohesive no matter who works with it.

A well-built design system isn’t about control, it’s about cohesion. It’s what makes your digital presence feel familiar, intentional, and trustworthy. When users see consistency in layout, tone, typography, and colour - they instinctively feel that they're in good hands.

In the end, a consistent website doesn’t just look like you know what you're doing, it proves it!
