In December of 2018, Novas held their third consecutive Christmas Sleep-Out, to raise funds for Limerick’s homeless. Here at Piquant, we have worked with Novas on multiple campaigns, including their annual Christmas campaign, and we thought it was about time we joined the Novas team outside Brown Thomas and got involved in their biggest fundraising event of the year.

This year’s Christmas campaign was supported by the Limerick hurlers, particularly Will O’Donoghue and Seamus Hickey, who joined us on the night of the sleep-out.

Funds from the sleep-out are raised through sponsorship cards and donations on the night, and we were amazed at the generosity shown by the people of Limerick that night.

The night was a great success, raising €26,936. The money raised will go directly to Novas’ services in Limerick and the wider mid-west region, including their Street Outreach Service and the Intensive Family Support Service.

Our Video Editor Graham described his experience of sleeping out in Limerick City:

“It’s not until you step inside your sleeping bag for the night that the reality hits you, and you remember what you’re really on the streets to raise money for. Up until then, it was a fun night collecting money, talking to people, and soaking up the festive spirit”

“After the last of the stragglers made their way home around 3am, it was time for sleep. Getting comfortable on the hard concrete ground, you start to get a sense of the vulnerability that comes with sleeping in a public space. Being woken up by street cleaners in the early hours of Saturday morning was a surreal experience. It’s one thing to sleep out on the streets for charity by choice, but it’s another to be unwillingly made homeless and have no choice but to survive a cold winter’s night.”

For us, it was only one night, but for many people living on the streets in Limerick, it’s their daily reality.
