Barnardos has been delivering Roots of Empathy programme since 2011, operating in classrooms across the country. Roots of Empathy is a programme for primary school children, with the aim of increasing empathy and reducing bullying and aggression. At the heart of the programme is a baby and parent who visit the classroom every three weeks during the school year. We were commissioned with creating assets that Barnardos could use to promote the Roots of Empathy programme in Ireland, including a promotional video and photography.
What we did:
- Photography
- Video Production
- Concept Development
- Script Writing
- Camera Operation
- Video Editing
- Motion Graphics Design
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT — We developed a concept centred around the ‘Baby as Teacher’, to raise awareness of the importance of teaching empathy in primary schools and demonstrate how babies become the teachers by building relationships and trust. Talking to teachers, children and the babies’ parents, the ‘Baby as Teacher’ concept showcased the benefits to the programme. Statistical data was used to strengthen the personal narratives from the interviewees.
VIDEO PRODUCTION — We interviewed a programme coordinator from Bardardos who delivered key information and empirical research about the programme. We also interviewed participants in the programme including a parent, a teacher and a child. B-roll of babies and young children in a Roots of Empathy session was used to showcase the programme, while diegetic sounds, combined with the interviews and music take the audience through the narrative and emotion of the video.
MOTION GRAPHICS DESIGN — On-brand motion graphics were developed and incorporated in the video, to reinforce key information, research and statistics.

PHOTOGRAPHY — We developed a photography moodboard to plan a shoot with the babies, children and parents. We shot environmental style portraits of the participants in the Piquant studio.
