The Irish Cancer Society is the national charity in the Republic of Ireland dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem, and improving the lives of those who have cancer. We worked with The Irish Cancer Society and their project partners NALA (National Adult Literacy Agency) and MSD to produce a video series to promote health literacy and encourage audiences to access health support and information.
What we did:
- Video, Photography and Radio Production
- Concept Development
- Script Writing
- Camera Operation
- Video Editing
- Motion Graphics Design
- Voice Over Recording
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT — The primary audiences for the video series were people diagnosed with cancer and their families, people waiting for cancer results, and people with unmet literacy and numeracy needs. The videos needed to communicate heavy information and key points to people who are distracted and stressed by their illness. Each video will target specific areas around finding information, appointments, and test results. We developed a video concept that presented personal stories and experiences in a warm, human, and personal tone, allowing key information to be delivered to the audience in a friendly and holistic way. Within their personal stories, the video participants also gave practical tips and advice which were reinforced with a carefully scripted voice-over and plain English motion graphics.
MOTION GRAPHICS DESIGN — Following Plain English practices we developed clear motion graphics and icons that illustrated the practical advice and tips on how to access health information and support. We worked closely with project partners NALA to ensure that the motion graphics were relevant to the target audience and could be understood and followed by audiences with unmet literacy and numeracy needs.
SCRIPT WRITING — In producing the scripts for each video we did a pre-interview phone call with each video participant to understand their health journey and to discuss the tips and advice that they wanted to share. Following the pre-interview, we developed a script that outlined the questions to be asked during the video interview. We also produced a carefully scripted voiceover that reinforced the tips and advice, in line with Plain English best practices. The voice-over was recorded in Piquant’s recording booth.
VIDEO PRODUCTION — Our experienced video production team spent time with each of the video participants at home to capture B-Roll that enriched their video interviews and communicated their personal stories to the audiences. Each video was carefully edited to allow space for the participants to tell their stories while also signposting where audiences could access health information and support for themselves. The call to action at the end of each video directed audiences to websites where they could access more information. In addition to the main landscape video, which was published on the Irish Cancer website and social media platforms we produced a series of short promotional clips sized for portrait and square to direct audiences to health support and information.
